Recently some friends on my Facebook page expressed concerns about the security of their wireless networks. In my work I deal with this problem all the time. So I thought I’d share my approach to this problem.
I am going to make a disclaimer right here. What follows is not an exhaustive lecture on the subject by any means. I’m just painting some broad strokes for home users who may want to try securing their own networks. Real nerds and IT people need read no further.

OK, so you’ve got more than one computer in the house or the office, and you have a broadband Internet connection (DSL, Cable, Satellite, etc.). And you want to share the connection among all your computers. So you figure out how to setup a wirelessnetwork and you get it all working. But is it secure?

Probably not. And the reason it’s not is that the good folks who made your router do not want to spend a lot of time with you on the phone helping you get set up. And believe me, neither do you. But to automate and fool-proof things for the do-it-yourself nerd, they conveniently turn off all that pesky security stuff that gets in the way of getting connected.

So, I’d like to offer a few suggestions for turning some of that stuff back on and securing your network with the same common sense that motivates most of us to lock our doors at night. These are not original ideas, and I’ll give you some links later on to some other great resources where I gleaned some of my facts and inspiration for this article.
